Snow

snow crystal Riding up in the ski-lift, while tons of snow were dumped on my frozen jacket, I had the opportunity to study this particular variety of frozen water. Amazing, the things that fall out of the sky. Note to self: must find out more about the way that snow crystals form.

Things that fly.

This is the story of how I designed, built, launched, and recovered a high-altitude weather balloon. Found at Bruce Sterling's. posted at: 01:40 | path: /en/links | permanent link

Things that fly, II

In September 2000 I purchased a microwave video transmitter / receiver system and a CCD bullet or lipstick camera. Fortunately at around the same time a friend imported several Aerotech ARCAS mid-powered rocket kits from an American online hobby retailer. posted at: 01:50 | path: /en/links | permanent link

One small step

We have met the Martians, and they are us.

Just why Chris Massaro didn't win the "first words to be said on Mars"-competition is beyond me.

Foto's Top 2000

Space

While it is too early to know what exactly we will find there, we may hope that an extraterrestrial 'gold rush' may help push the frontiers of exploration to include asteroids.

Journeys with George

capture Some thoughts after (finally) watching Journeys with George yesterday. (1) Never follow campaign as member of press corps. (2) Nothing on the campaign trail is real, everything is prepped, no real discussions, no real people, no real nothing. Everybody in the entourage knows this and complains about it. Why then is this situation stable? Why will the same thing happen in 2004? (3) Bush seems like a nice guy. (4) I outscored GWB on the math SAT, though not on the verbal. (5) It seems that Bush never answers any serious question, but instead disarms every journalist with a little something he knows (The filmer's interest in Newsweek guy, for instance). This alone should be an argument for job rotation among political journalists.

(6) Buckler is still being marketed in the US! (7) The President drinks it!

Simulation

Fifty years ago, (or was it 49?) physicists Enrico Fermi, Stanislaw Ulam and John Pasta (link?) invented computer simulation as a scientific methodology. Motivated, mostly, by their desire to do something with the new machine.

Computers were brand new; in fact the Los Alamos Maniac was barely finished. [...] We discussed this at length and decided to formulate a problem simple to state, but such that a solution would require a lengthy computation which could not be done with pencil and paper or with existing mechanical computers.

Teletekst
